  3. We've got worms!

Looks like our compost system is working, because today when the 3/4s took the bin off after 5 weeks of "cooking "; it was rich, loamy, sweet smelling and full of worms!
The compost went straight on our vegie beds.
With beds now ready for planting after summer crops were harvested, we put in garlic, broad beans and snow peas.
When digging the compost in, we noticed lots of worms already in our garden beds. A sign that the soil quality has imporved drastically from the hard, compacted, weed infested patch it once was.
How lucky we are to have our farm where we have a constant source of green matter and pooey straw to make the world's best compost.
Compost is CHOCOLATE FOR THE GARDEN!!!!!!
Here is our school's compost recipe:

    • A LAYER OF GREEN MATTER , KITCHEN SCRAPS, LAWN CLIPPINGS, CHOOK SCRAPS
    • LAYER OF DRY MATTER, POOEY STRAW FROM ANIMAL ENCLOSURES. LAYER NEEDS TO BE ALMOST TWICE THICKNESS OF GREEN LAYER
    • FEW HANDFULS SOIL TO ADD BACTERIA AND MICROBES TO AIDE COMPOST BREAKDOWN,
    • WATERING CAN FULL OF WATER.
    • REPEAT LAYERS
    • PUT ON LID
    • TURN ONCE IN A WHILE AND ADD MORE WATER SO IT DOESN'T DRY OUT.
    • IN ABOUT 5 WEEKS COMPOST SHOULD BE READY, LAYERS SHOULD NO LONGER BE SEPARATE, BUT WHOLE BIN SHOULD BE PLEASANT SMELLING AND SOIL LIKE.

CAN ADD LAYERS SLOWLY OVER FEW WEEKS LIKE I DO AT HOME OR DO LOTS AT ONCE TILL BIN IS FULL.

ONCE YOUR COMPOST IS ON THE GARDEN, WATCH YOUR PLANTS EXPLODE OUT OF THE GROUND!!!
