All the grade 1 and 2 students today made vegie soup from the amazing tasty vegies we grew in our school gardens. We freshly picked potatoes, turnips, celery, parsley, celery, spinach, peas and carrots.
What awesome chefs all the kids were;chopping, slicing, stirring, frying. The queue for soup at lunch time was out the door and just kept growing! Well Done everyone.

Last Chance Planting
Today we have planted 30 new trees in our school yard. The weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer, yippee. Now is a great time to plant so things can get their roots established before the hot, dry summer months. Grade 4 and grade 1 have planted a tree that they have to look after for the rest of the year to give it the best start possible. We dug big, deeep holes so the plant could send its roots deep into the ground as quickly as possible.
Even if you don't think you'll be in the same place to see it fully grown, Plant a tree this month at home so others in the future can enjoy it.

Junior Grades Fairy Garden
After several weeks of digging, mulching, hefting wheelbarrows, planting and watering, the fairy garden is now finished and being enjoyed by the junior grades.
Sustainability students had a ball creating this wonderland to play in. Hopefully in time, as the plants grow, it will become a jungle alive with imagination and stories. Complete with big gnarled tree stumps, winding paths and luscious foliage the children can indulge in imaginative play.
The secret to a harmonious playground is active engaged children and we think our new fairy garden is just the ticket!!!

Stirfry
Mrs Clayton andd the grade 3 and 4 children has been harvesting some vegies from our garden. The children then made the following stirfry. This is Mrs Clayton's recipe.
STIR FRIED GREENS
INGREDIENTS
• Garlic
• Oil
• Asian greens or any veg really
• We used our veg that the children grew in our gardens: spring onions, spinach, pak choy, broccolini, beetroot leaves, broad bean tips and celery.
METHOD
• Put oil in pan and when hot add garlic
• When garlic starts to sizzle add onion
• Then add harder veg like celery, broccoli
• Lastly add leafy greens
• Add a dash of soy, or oyster sauce, or hoisin
• Serve with rice
• If more adventurous a hint of chilli in with the garlic or some ginger, squeeze of lemon at the end is also nice
Lastly, enjoy and know that you’re getting a good hit of nutrients and antioxidants.

Why Grow Vegies
Why grow your own vegies?
By Mrs Clayton.
Growing your own vegetables has many positive benefits such as:
• Healthier food (you know what chemicals, if any, have been used)
• Exercise
• Working outdoors
• The whole family can join in
• Have a better understanding of how nature works.
• Organic, no chemicals
• Fresher, last longer
• It’s fun
• Less food miles
What are Food Miles?
We have talked a lot about food miles in the garden and farm. Food miles is a term which refers to the distance food is transported from the time of its production until it reaches the consumer. Food miles are one factor used when assessing the environmental impact of food, including the impact on global warming.
Food miles are a way of attempting to measure how far food has travelled before it reaches the consumer. It is a good way of looking at the environmental impact of foods and their ingredients.
Growing your own veg means the food itself creates no pollution on its way to the table.
• At school we’ve sown our own broccoli and carrot seed that we collected from the last crops. How does this lessen the food miles?
• We don’t use miles in Australia but kilometres instead, could we re-name this concept, any ideas?
• What else does our farm and garden produce that lessens the pollution associated with transporting goods?
